Project #10 - Maniac Mason
"I communicate"
For this piece I wanted to show the significance of Charles Manson and his death. In the late 1960s, he formed what became known as the Manson Family, a quasi-commune in California. Manson's followers committed a series of nine murders at four locations in July and August 1969. This sparked huge news to the nation if not the world. so i dedicated this piece to him and his crazy ways.

Project #9 - Beloved Elvis
"I communicate"
This piece reflected the death of Elvis Presley and it significance. basquiat made many postcards before he was discovered and i used that as an influence for this painting. This artwork pulls both my love for basquiat and my love for history. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines that coincided with the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, made him enormously popular—and controversial.
"I reflect"
I worked on this piece outside of school, and I took a few days and stepped back to really go through and analyze what I wanted to do for this painting after I applied all my pictures matted them. I honestly had such a hard time liking the painting after I started b/c I was picturing the piece looking like the ones before, but I need to accept the idea that no all my pieces are gonna be masterpieces and that's okay.

Project #8 - Faces
Little disclaimer (I had other pictures of my in progress but I must've deleted them)
"I communicate"
This piece I based off of an image of one of basquiat early work. that piece presented showed disfigured faces and I liked the concept. It made me feel open, that people can be together, but so different. that's how I wanted to express through my painting.
"I reflect"
This was another fast piece, this is a bigger canvas as well and I first started by spreading paint all over the canvas with a paint. I didn't know how i was going to approach this piece, or even what to do. I did however want this to be great b/c it's on such a large canvas.

Project #7 - Man on the Moon
Little disclaimer (I had other pictures of my in progress but I must've deleted them)
"I communicate"
I did this piece so show how significant the landing of the first man on the moon and all the adverts associated with this. It shows how proud out country was and it's importance. This includes both manned and unmanned missions. This took place on July 20, 1969 when at that time in our history technologies were first continuing to advance. Plus these ads are pretty darn gnarly.
"I reflect"
This piece was probably one of the fastest pieces I've cranked out. In all honesty, but doing it I had no idea how to start, where to put the arrangement of pictures and how many and so on. I came to the conclusion to flow with the painting let it speak to me. So I did and it was a successful painting in the form of basquiat.

Project #6 - Who is the Monster?
Little disclaimer (I had other pictures of my in progress but I must've deleted them)
"I communicate through my work"
This very bright crazy piece was to symbolize the Vietnam war. This piece in no way shape or form is stating that one side is superior to another. The monster or whatever you depict this as symbolizes humanity as a whole fighting wars, taking life of the innocence, man dying for their countries. The monster is what we became, the horrid the war symbolizes. I intend to show young and old what we had, what we did, good or bad. We reflect upon those such moments in hopes of not letting them reoccur.
"I reflect"
Oh man starting this piece I hated the way it looked, yet I told myself keep working into it and you may be surprised how much you turn out to like it. I definitely needed to take some time away from my piece because i feared the over working of the piece would destroy it. I find it is always good to step back, take a deep breath, and letting the painting itself speak to you. I also got great advice on how to improve my piece from my teacher and peers which helped a lot to understand the mind of other and how they felt.

Project #5 - Are We Equal?
Little disclaimer (I had other in progress pictures but i must've deleted them i will add them when i finish the paintings)
"I communicate through my work"
In this piece of artwork I really tried to channel my inner Basquiat in doing so it turned out to look way better than I ever expected. I intended to show mugshots from the 1950-1960s from the civil rights movement and paint over top. It's looks like a monkey in a sense which was a racial slur back then. This piece was to show that because we have different skin colors that makes us any less human or the same.
"I reflect"
I had many moments when I wasn't sure if I was taking the right approach or if it was even gonna look good. I took a day where I just sat my painting on the counter and looked at it and said "take a day" so I did. This break or brief moment lead me to become more loose with this. I hope seeing the mugshots underneath will help other's understand the piece more.

Project #4 - Noose
"I communicate through my work."
With this piece it is intended to say how slavery was once one of the most common and almost everyone had one. I related this piece to parts of the world that still engage in taking someone and treating them as such. Some of the issues I'm examining are how significant of an impact it left on humanity as a whole because such events still take place in other parts of world.
"I reflect."
I took a long step back because i didn't know how to approach such a deep piece and make it speak volumes. So I'm removing image transfers and I created the noose. I hope this adds a big significance to this piece. I tried to consider how these pieces would go together, but in all honesty I took a big leap of faith. That's exactly how I approached this piece.

Project #3 - Chief's Unite
"I communicate through my work."
This artwork is intended to show how the native american head dress was significant to being chief and symbolizes positivity not only in humanity but the world. In the second piece it shows people in our history who have done a big significance of good that still effects our way of life to this day. By giving them head dresses it shows they took a hold of an idea, stood there ground and took leadership all while doing something significant.
"I reflect."
While printing out my pictures and head dresses I took time to step back and analyze where I wanted things and how I wanted them placed on the wood. I decided I wanted larger and smaller imagery. I played them out in my head laid them down and pictured all aspects that would follow.

Project #2- What is Human?
"I developed my art making skill"
For this project I used the same scrapping method, and also applied red horizontal squares and carved into them for more texture. I also used the method of image transfer taking the powerful images applied matte medium to the board and to the picture and let them dry over night. The next day I took a small sponge, a cup of water and started working the white of the back of the image off this takes some serious elbow grease! I had used this before last year but I think it turned out good for my second time.
"I reflect."
Once I finished the image transfers is when I took that step back and thought "what should I do?", because i wasn't sure where to approach the project after. I still don't think i'm finished with the project, but all in all i really liked this outcome. Before i started i knew it was gonna take some work because of the image transfer.

Project #1- Hello Mr. President
"I developed my art making skills."
During this project I used many techniques including taking a paint knife and scraping paint across the canvas board. This made the paint apply thicker and smoother. I also took oil pastels and draw over top of the black and background. During this I also carved into the paint to give it more of a texture look. As I was working I gained more skill with applying the paint in a better manner.
"I reflect."
There was multiple times Mrs. Maclay had to stop me and tell me to step back and just look at my work and see what I cloud change or enhance. At one point she asked the class to analyze my work and asked "what should she do?" i loved the feed back from everyone. Before I even started my project I already had an idea of what I could do, but I had to test a few things before I actually thought "this looks good, i'm gonna stick with this." I also had sketched out how I wanted to approach my project and how I was going to achieve it.

Inprogress report for social commentary
I achieved my social commentary simply taking a canvas board as my substrate I then applied gesso to the whole board. I also ripped pages out of old books and magazines and matte medium them down covering the whole board. I took traced out tv's on rice paper and applied wax over top. This was my first experience with wax and I can say I honestly really enjoy the outcome of the project. I wasn't expecting it to look this good at all.
Social Commentary
I chose these two pieces b/c they showed very expressive qualities in today's society. We as individuals have become so use to cell phones and tvs it's like we can't be without it. In the second image it expresses how some teachers and adults teach of act and be a certain way and we never use our creativity.
Inprogress for Metamorphosis
For this project I used watercolor paper and acrylic i first started with a simple sketch for what I was going to do and started applying watercolor. I wish it blended more than it did and I wish I highlighted certain areas more to give it more value. On the plus side of things I love the colors i chose. This isn't my best work, but I'm not mad at it.
Metamorphosis
I've decided for my metamorphosis I wanted to do something a bit unique showing not just one thing mine will show a transition from a hot air balloon to a jelly fish. My substrate will be water color on water color paper not sure what my dimensions are.e1
Expressive Selfie....
This is my progress report, i really suck personally at portraits i can honestly say this is pretty bad. I think it turned out the way it did was b/c of how married to the idea i was. The more and more i worked on it the more and more it looked less like me and let's talk about proportions man, nope can't get that right either. If i nailed one thing in this project it was probably the flesh tones
Two powerful self portraits
1. I love how this artist expressed different portions maybe expressing some type of mood within.| 2. I chose Basquiat because personally he is one of my favorite artist. I love how abstract his pieces are, very colorful which is another thing i hope to show in my selfie project.
